4. Anger: Buddhist Wisdom for Cooling The Flames – Thich Nhat Hanh
Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist Zen Master, peace activist, scholar and poet. Throughout the book he gives us new ways to “take care” of our anger and transform it into peace and healing.
“To take good care of ourselves, we must go back and take care of the wounded child inside of us. You have to practice going back to your wounded child every day. You have to embrace him or her tenderly, like a big brother or a big sister. You have to talk to him, talk to her. And you can write a letter to the little child in you, of two or three pages, to that you recognize his or her presence, and will do everything you can to heal his or her wounds.“

Elizabeth Gilbert also talks about ideas and inspiration as spiritual phenomena – she proposes that if you don’t put an idea into action then it will leave you and find somebody else who will!
“Recognizing that people’s reactions don’t belong to you is the only sane way to create. If people enjoy what you’ve created, terrific. If people ignore what you’ve created, too bad. If people misunderstand what you’ve created, don’t sweat it. And what if people absolutely hate what you’ve created? What if people attack you with savage vitriol, and insult your intelligence, and malign your motives, and drag your good name through the mud? Just smile sweetly and suggest – as politely as you possibly can – that they go make their own fucking art. Then stubbornly continue making yours.”

“All human actions are motivated at their deepest level by two emotions–fear or love. In truth there are only two emotions–only two words in the language of the soul…. Fear wraps our bodies in clothing, love allows us to stand naked. Fear clings to and clutches all that we have, love gives all that we have away. Fear holds close, love holds dear. Scientists, on the other hand, can’t put their finger on exactly what created the universe, or what it’s made of, and may even call it ‘nothingness’. “The most powerful time to reprogram the subconscious mind is when you’re falling asleep at night. In doing so we begin to notice all of the beauty in the world that we might otherwise have missed!
“Some say they don’t really know what they are looking for in life. This might be because, instead of getting in touch with how they feel, they have led their lives according to other people’s expectations. Live your life not to satisfy others, but to fulfill what your heart desires.”
55. The Universe Has Your Back: How to Feel Safe and Trust Your Life No Matter What – Gabrielle Bernstein
Gabrielle Bernstein is a life-coach and motivational speaker. Throughout The Universe Has your Back, she encourages you to have faith in the universe and let go of fear. “When you make this type of commitment to the Universe, it’s important to be aware of any sneaky, fear-based story that can hook you back in. This is the story that pain has purpose. We live in a world that supports drama, terror, separation, and hardship. We’ve been guided to believe that without pain we have not accomplished or achieved. I’m here to bust that myth now. Pain does not equal purpose. Your purpose is to be joyful. Your purpose is to live with ease. Your purpose is to surrender to the love of the Universe so you can live a happy life. Accept the purpose of love, and your life will radically change this instant.”

“People tend to burden themselves with so many choices. Once you make that choice, your path through life becomes totally clear.”
