3. A Return to Love - Marianne Williamson

A Return to Love - Marianne Williamson

A return to love takes some of the fundamental lessons from the complex A Course in Miracles and makes them easier for us to digest. Marianne Williamson believes that no matter what we are struggling with in our lives, love is always the answer. By practicing more love we can change our lives and make the world a better place for future generations.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?

Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist Zen Master, peace activist, scholar and poet. He draws on the insight of Buddha that anger is one of the three sources of unhappiness (alongside obsessive desire and ignorance) and insight from modern science that it can also ruin our health. Throughout the book he gives us new ways to “take care” of our anger and transform it into peace and healing.

Anger: Buddhist Wisdom for Cooling The Flames - Thich Nhat Hanh
To take good care of ourselves, we must go back and take care of the wounded child inside of us. You have to practice going back to your wounded child every day. You have to embrace him or her tenderly, like a big brother or a big sister. You have to talk to him, talk to her. And you can write a letter to the little child in you, of two or three pages, to that you recognize his or her presence, and will do everything you can to heal his or her wounds.

Ask and It Is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Desires - Esther and Jerry Hicks

6. Be Here Now - Ram Dass

Ram Dass, formerly known as Professor Richard Alpert, is known for his pioneering research on Psilocybin and LSD in the 1960s. After experimenting with these powerful psychedelics he embarked on his spiritual journey to India where he was introduced to Eastern philosophy. Published in 1971, Be Here Now was one of the first books to introduce these ideas to Western society and is a must read for anybody on this path!

Be Here Now - Ram Dass
This love is actually part of you; it is always flowing through you. It’s like the subatomic texture of the universe, the dark matter that connects everything. When you tune in to that flow, you will feel it in your own heart—not your physical heart or your emotional heart, but your spiritual heart, the place you point to in your chest when you say, “I am."

Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon - Dr. Joe Dispenza

This book will transform your perspective of what it means to be supernatural. Dr. Joe Dispenza argues that we all have extraordinary capabilities within us and he offers up the knowledge and tools for us to tune into them. Becoming Supernatural allows us to discover who we really are aside from what we have been conditioned to believe!

The only way we can change our lives is to change our energy — to change the electromagnetic field we are constantly broadcasting. In other words, to change our state of being, we have to change how we think and how we feel.

Big Magic was pretty much the inspiration and motivation I needed to kick-start this blog! I’m sure I’m not the only one who puts off creative ideas due to feelings of not being good enough or successful. This book challenges those thoughts and encourages you to create, just because. Elizabeth Gilbert also talks about ideas and inspiration as spiritual phenomena - she proposes that if you don’t put an idea into action then it will leave you and find somebody else who will!

Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear - Elizabeth Gilbert
Recognizing that people’s reactions don’t belong to you is the only sane way to create. If people enjoy what you’ve created, terrific. If people ignore what you’ve created, too bad. If people misunderstand what you’ve created, don’t sweat it. And what if people absolutely hate what you’ve created? What if people attack you with savage vitriol, and insult your intelligence, and malign your motives, and drag your good name through the mud? Just smile sweetly and suggest – as politely as you possibly can – that they go make their own fucking art. Then stubbornly continue making yours.

Breathing Under Water: Spirituality and the Twelve Steps - Richard Rohr

Many of us are addicted to something or other, and shared pain can bring us together to overcome it. In Breathing Under Water, Richard Rohr speaks about the Twelve Step Program and its connections to Christian teachings. He says that by using this program, we can connect to God and compassion to overcome our addictions and suffering.

And to be fully honest, I think your heart needs to be broken, and broken open, at least once to have a heart at all or to have a heart for others.

10. The Celestine Prophecy - James Redfield

The Celestine Prophecy draws on ancient wisdom found in a Peruvian manuscript and reveals the secrets that can change the way we think about our lives. It provides the insight to make connections between our life events and predict what is going to happen in our own futures, so we can move forward with heightened energy and optimism!

The Celestine Prophecy - James Redfield
We must assume every event has significance and contains a message that pertains to our questions...this especially applies to what we used to call bad things...the challenge is to find the silver lining in every event, no matter how negative.

The book promises to change the way that you look at your life to the extent that you’ll “live in a new world aligned with nature”.

Are you willing to be sponged out, erased, cancelled, made nothing? Are you willing to be made nothing? dipped into oblivion? If not, you will never really change.

12. Conversations with God - Neale Donald Walsch

When the author, Neal Donald Walsch, was facing a low period in his life he turned to God to look for answers. As he finished writing a letter to God, he felt called to continue writing and in turn came out with remarkable answers to his own questions. With humour throughout, this book is directed at anybody who is yet to find the answers they’ve been searching for!

Conversations with God - Neale Donald Walsch
All human actions are motivated at their deepest level by two emotions--fear or love. In truth there are only two emotions--only two words in the language of the soul.... Fear wraps our bodies in clothing, love allows us to stand naked. Fear clings to and clutches all that we have, love gives all that we have away. Fear holds close, love holds dear. Fear grasps, love lets go. Fear rankles, love soothes. Fear attacks, love amends.

This is an interesting read for anybody interested in the use of psychedelics as a portal to mystical regions of the human body and soul!

I thought I had died, and that I might not ever come back. I don’t know what happened. All of a sudden, BAM, there I was. It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

Eastern Body, Western Mind: Psychology and the Chakra System as a Path to the Self - Anodea Judith

In Eastern Body, Western Mind, Anodea Judith combines the Eastern chakra system with Western psychology with implications for social issues such as addiction, codependence, family dynamics, sexuality and personal empowerment. The book offers powerful insights into the connections between trauma and the chakra system and how we can use this knowledge to get into balance.

Our culture, so proud of its mind-over-matter philosophy, cuts us off from our bodily experience and from the earth itself. In this severance, our sexuality is negated, our senses assaulted, our environment abused, and our power manipulated. Our ground is our form, and without it we lose our individuality.

Eat Pray Love is the bestselling memoir that tells the story of Elizabeth Gilbert leaving her marriage and travelling the world in a search for more. Her story is honest and uncensored making it incredibly relatable and empowering to many in a Western society. The book was so influential that it has since been turned into a film adaptation and there has since been a book called Eat Pray Love Made Me Do It!

Eat Pray Love: One Woman's Search for Everything - Elizabeth Gilbert
You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate. If you want to control things in your life so bad, work on the mind. That’s the only thing you should be trying to control.

Everything Is Here to Help You: A Loving Guide to Your Soul's Evolution - Matt Kahn

In this book, spiritual teacher Matt Kahn offers support for getting out of our ego space and into the place of the soul. With techniques such as surrender, energy clearing and mantras, Everything is Here to Help You gives us the tools we need to connect to our heart space and move away from a life of fear and judgment!

This means that even though patterns may repeat throughout our lives, we are always experiencing them from a more expanded level of consciousness than we had in the past. If we focus on experiences as superstitious forms of punishment, we innocently deny the consciousness within each moment that can see what has yet to be seen, while daring to respond as we have never responded before.

Dr. Michael Newton, a hypnotherapist who coined his own technique to reach subjects’ hidden memories, tells the stories of 29 people who he placed in a state of “superconsciousness”. Through their accounts, we learn insights to frequent questions about what happens after we die. This is a thought provoking book for anybody interested in the afterlife and reincarnation!

Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives - Michael Newton
When clients tell me how much they suffered from the actions of family members, my first question to their conscious mind is, "If you had not been exposed to this person as a child, what would you now lack in understanding?" It may take a while, but the answer is in our minds. There are spiritual reasons for our being raised as children around certain kinds of people, just as other people are designated to be near us as adults.

This book is all about letting go of obstacles and blockages that are hindering our spiritual growth. Through decades of experience as a psychiatrist, Dr Hawkins argues that surrender is one of the most beneficial practices to relieving human suffering and cultivating more happiness, love, joy, success, health and enlightenment. This book holds the answers for letting go of anything that is holding us back from such a life!

Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender - David R. Hawkins
Repressed and suppressed feelings require counter-energy to keep them submerged. It takes energy to hold down our feelings. As these feelings are relinquished, the energy that had been holding down the negativity is now freed for constructive uses.

Light Is The New Black: A Guide to Answering Your Soul's Callings and Working Your Light - Rebecca Campbell

This book is a definite must read for anybody who want to claim back their power! Rebecca Campbell tells the story of her life and how adversity forced her to rediscover her light. She gives practical tools to get in touch with your soul’s calling and find the light that resides within each of us. This is a book that will leave you feeling empowered!

And before long, the whole world lights up. Your light is contagious.

Moonology is all about using the power of the moon to manifest your dreams and desires. This book is a personal favourite of mine because it is so informative and detailed, yet so easy to work with. It explains everything you need to know about the moon cycles and how to work with their energy.

If you want to start a moonology practice I would also recommend this moon journal - it is so beautifully illustrated and organised, and allows you to track your manifesting progress.

At the time of the New Moon, ideas are coming from the ether and we must decide which of them we want to latch onto. We need to remember that anything is possible. This is definitely the time to think about what you do want, and not think about what you don’t want. Meditate on your dreams. That will allow you to tune in to your higher self, so you have all the guidance you need to move towards them.

According to Thich Nhat Hanh, acknowledging and transforming our suffering is essential for our happiness, not the avoidance strategies that many of us attempt. In this book, he offers practices to face suffering head on and transform it without being overwhelmed by it. This is a must read for anyone struggling to deal with negative life events!

No Mud, No Lotus: The Art of Transforming Suffering - Thich Nhat Hanh
Without suffering, there's no happiness. So we shouldn't discriminate against the mud. We have to learn how to embrace and cradle our own suffering and the suffering of the world, with a lot of tenderness.

This book serves as a reminder to return to ourselves when we are getting caught up in the rush of modern life.

Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.

This was the first book I purchased when I began my spiritual journey, so it holds a special place in my heart. It is perfect for anybody who wants to begin a spiritual practice but doesn’t know where to start, or if you feel lost and in need of actionable steps. Kyle offers 111 spiritual practices that you can make use of daily - it’s not a book that requires a lot of reading, but instead little segments of daily wisdom to progress on your journey.

Raise Your Vibration: 111 Practices to Increase Your Spiritual Connection - Kyle Gray
These amazing religions talk about a vibrational sound that created the universe, an energy they call ‘Om’ or ‘Aum’. Scientists, on the other hand, can’t put their finger on exactly what created the universe, or what it’s made of, and may even call it ‘nothingness’. Whatever you like to call it, it’s real, it’s there and we all know it. We can feel it because we’re part of it.

Rise Sister Rise: A Guide to Unleashing the Wise, Wild Woman Within - Rebecca Campbell

Rise Sister Rise is all about women finding their own power in a patriarchal society. The book calls for us to stop dulling down our feminine energy and instead connect to our Shakti and wisdom! This is a truly empowering read!

Natural Witchcraft dates back further than all of the great religions. Natural Witchcraft is the worship of Mother God and her seasons. As seeing all of life as sacred. Of tapping into the power and wisdom that we have within each and every one of us.

Many of us feel lost and unsure of what our purpose is in this life and this can lead to a host of conditions including depression and anxiety. Caroline Myss argues that we each have a Sacred Contract, which explains why we are here, what we are supposed to learn and who we are meant to meet. In this book, Caroline explains how to identify your own spiritual archetypes and how to use them to decipher your own sacred contract and fulfill your divine potential!

Sacred Contracts: Awakening Your Divine Potential - Caroline Myss
To believe in an invisible order, a divine or implicate order, as quantum physics calls it, or the order beneath the disorder that chaos theory describes, is a healthier, more interesting choice than seeing no meaning in life whatsoever.

This moral parable has been an incredibly influential and moving tale for millions of people and therefore must be included in this list!

Wisdom cannot be imparted. Wisdom that a wise man attempts to impart always sounds like foolishness to someone else ... Knowledge can be communicated, but not wisdom. One can find it, live it, do wonders through it, but one cannot communicate and teach it.

According to Laura Lynne Jackson, we all have the ability to tune into “the secret language of the universe”. There is something that matters more than any of those things and that is finding the essence of who you are beyond that short-lived entity, that short-lived personalized sense of self. You find peace not by rearranging the circumstances of your life, but by realizing who you are at the deepest level.

The further I wake into this life, the more I realize that God is everywhere and the extraordinary is waiting quietly beneath the skin of all that is ordinary. Light is in both the broken bottle and the diamond, and music is in both the flowing violin and the water dripping from the drainage pipe. Yes, God is under the porch as well as on top of the mountain, and joy is in both the front row and the bleachers, if we are willing to be where we are.

The Divine Matrix: Bridging Time, Space, Miracles and Belief - Gregg Braden

According to Gregg Braden, a former aerospace computer systems designer, we each have the power to connect to the “Divine Matrix” to create joy and heal suffering! This book illustrates these ideas with both science and real-life stories.

Manifestation begins with the willingness to make room in our beliefs for something that supposedly doesn’t exist. We create that “something” through the force of consciousness and awareness.

38. The Field - Lynne McTaggart

People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child—our own two eyes. All is a miracle.

If you often find yourself dwelling on the past or waiting for better things to come then this could be the book you need!

The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment - Eckhart Tolle
All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present. Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry – all forms of fear – are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence.

Hero - Rhonda Byrne
The most powerful time to reprogram the subconscious mind is when you’re falling asleep at night. When you’re in that very sleepy state of being half asleep and half awake, plant the thought that you can do anything and you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Your aim is to make that “believing in yourself” thought your last thought

The Ego, however, is not who you really are. The ego is your self-image; it is your social mask; it is the role you are playing. Your social mask thrives on approval. It wants control, and it is sustained by power, because it lives in fear.

As the name suggests, this book is all about slowing down and being more mindful with our lives. The Things You Can Only See When You Slow Down: How to be Calm in a Busy World - Haemin Sunim
Some say they don’t really know what they are looking for in life. This might be because, instead of getting in touch with how they feel, they have led their lives according to other people’s expectations. Live your life not to satisfy others, but to fulfill what your heart desires.

The Universe Has Your Back: How to Feel Safe and Trust Your Life No Matter What - Gabrielle Bernstein

Gabrielle Bernstein is a life-coach and motivational speaker. Throughout The Universe Has your Back, she encourages you to have faith in the universe and let go of fear. She offers spiritual practices and rituals along the way that will help you to tune into the powers of the universe! There is even an oracle card deck to go with this book, which I just think is the cutest thing!

When you make this type of commitment to the Universe, it’s important to be aware of any sneaky, fear-based story that can hook you back in. This is the story that pain has purpose. We live in a world that supports drama, terror, separation, and hardship. We’ve been guided to believe that without pain we have not accomplished or achieved. I’m here to bust that myth now. Pain does not equal purpose. Your purpose is to be joyful. Your purpose is to live with ease. Your purpose is to surrender to the love of the Universe so you can live a happy life. Accept the purpose of love, and your life will radically change this instant.

The Untethered Soul helps us to get in touch with who we really are. By using meditation and mindfulness, Michael Singer shows how to tap into our consciousness and release ourselves from our minds. The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself - Michael A. Singer
People tend to burden themselves with so many choices. But, in the end, you can throw it all away and just make one basic, underlying decision: Do you want to be happy, or do you not want to be happy? It’s really that simple. Once you make that choice, your path through life becomes totally clear.

Your Soul's Plan: Discovering the Real Meaning of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born - Robert Schwartz
Judgments are thoughts, and thoughts are living, moving energy. Because energy attracts like energy, judgment attracts judgmental people. The world is a mirror in which we glimpse ourselves. If there are judgmental people around us, it may be that life is asking us to examine our own willingness or tendency to judge.
